When Winning Just Isn't Good Enough - Dangers of Being Too Competitive

“A GOLD MEDAL IS A WONDERFUL THING. BUT IF YOU’RE NOT ENOUGH WITHOUT IT, YOU’LL NEVER BE ENOUGH WITH IT.” (from the movie"Cool Runnings" based on 1988 Jamaican bobsled team at Calgary Olympics).

The quote comes near the conclusion of the film. Derice Bannock (played by Leon Robinson) asks his coach, disgraced Olympic gold medalist Irving “Irv” Blitzer (played by John Candy) why he resorted to cheating, especially when he already had fame and fortune. Irv tries to explain that he had to keep on winning because that was his whole life. Derice can’t still understand, so Irv then delivers the quote.
If you make it your sole purpose in life to just accumulate material items, wealth and fame, you’ll never be satisfied with your lot in life as you’ll always want more. Sometimes, you must just be happy and content with what you have.
If some of you are competitive like I am and like to set high standards and goals for yourselves, then this message is for you. Last summer I spent tim…

A New Measure of ROI

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”
I heard a great insight today from my new friend, and premier motivational speaker and leader in the self-help and coaching industry, Shannon Graham in Santa Barabara, CA.  He talks of no longer selling just his knowledge but instead using his 'gift' (in his case his creativity) to help clients answer questions where the answer does not exist. This shifted his level of value higher in his clients lives as well as his own. He encourages people to do the type of work which you enjoy and what you truly desire. Two benefits to this: 1. You add more value to your clients.; 2. You add more value to yourself as you continue to grow and create impact.
Too many leaders reach a value of development that they feel is good enough, and that might be even higher than they ever dreamed to begin with.  However, I say you want to think of those you serve first and the contribution you have for the world -your calling. Focus…

Choices - How are you choosing to use your gift?

We make choices everyday. One choice we make is how and with whom we are going to create positive impact. This choice I believe we want to have the greatest amount of impact combined with influence and inspiration. What we do for others has a direct impact on how we feel about ourselves.

To make choices that have this level of purpose and meaningfulness, first we need to be aware of the choices we make and that we have far more control over choices and what happens in our lives. Second, we need to become more aware of the beliefs and attitudes behind these choices as they shape our feelings and thoughts. I heard my good friend Steve Miller of Implicit Solutions refer to this as the story we tell ourselves. When we make choices driven from our "essence" of who we are, the REAL us, and not a role or identity we create, we feel congruency and that is when the three Is kick in (Influence, Impact, and Inspiration).  The opposite is true as well. When we make choices based on who …
